On Thursday, Lockheed Martin announced that it will cut 4,000 jobs. The job losses are another sign of the slowdown in the defense business due to less U.S. government spending. In a USA Today article, Lockheed Martin’s CEO Marillyn Hewson said “In the face of government budget cuts and an increasingly complex global security landscape, these actions are necessary for the future of out business.”
Layoffs of long-time employees will be especially tough. CEO Hewson said, “Reducing our workforce of dedicated employees and closing facilities are among the most difficult decisions we make.”
I’ve talked to several defense contract employees in the past few weeks. They told me they were well aware of the potential impact on them. But they didn’t think it would really happen to them. But it did. So now they realize they need to get going and search for that new job. Several expect to return to defense; others want to decide if a position in another industry using their skill sets is a smart move.
If you are a professional in the defense industry, don’t wait. Now is the time to get prepared. Your job and career (and paycheck) is no doubt a priority for you and your family.
